  • Balancing – From standing into Arm Balancing

    AsianJasmineYoga
My name is Iir Prihatinawati. I am Indonesian. I am a registered yoga teacher (RYT200) at Yoga Alliance UK. I did my yoga teacher qualification in Ubud, Bali and I have just moved to the beautiful city of Cambridge, UK.

I learned yoga when I was little and as compliment to help me breathing due to my asthma problem which then lead to asana practice. Yoga became my regular practice when I was pregnant with my first child.

In 2010-12 I had my first experience of living in the UK, in Cambridge where I indulged myself with as many yoga styles as I can possibly obtain. I was a fan of Bikram by Jennifer Hersch, was addicted to Pillar Carillo’s Vinyasa classes and Louise Palmer-Masterton's Ashtanga classes, cherished the Hatha and restorative classes of Beverly Nolan, and enjoy the Jivamukti by Mark Stevens and Andrea Kwiatkowsky. I kept up my yoga practices during and after pregnancy with Rachel Moore’s classes. I have been a follower of Vinyasa and Ashtanga ever since.

In 2013, I moved back to Indonesia. Life with two small children, as expected, can be very hectic. It was a luxury to be able to get to the studio to do yoga, but if I can not I kept up my practice of Ashtanga and Vinyasa at home with my children and sometime went to Ashtanga classes taught by Martin Elliyanto. During my home practices, friends started coming over joining my practice which then grew into my early teaching classes.

In 2015, I completed my Vinyasa teaching qualification with Frog Lotus Yoga (www.froglotusyoga.com) in beautiful Ubud, Bali under the guidance of these beautiful ladies: Vidya Jacqueline Heisel – founder at Suryalilla Retreat Centre, Spain (www.suryalila.com); Alicia Bargh – founder and teacher at Alicia Waters Yoga, Cornwall (www.vinyasayogacornwall.com); Jenilee Toner – founder and teacher at Hot Warrior Yoga, NY (www.HotWarriorYoga.com); and Maria Abel (www.imagin-abel.com).

In my most recent journey, I rediscovered my body through the teaching of Asanas and I fell in love all over again with the philosophical foundation of these practices. I found the beauty in proper and exact alignment during practice, how it affects my posture and how this precision efficiently gives more benefit to my body. It also increased my appreciation for respecting one’s body and being grateful for each of the body parts working in harmony together. I am now bringing these values to my teaching – the feeling of connection between the body and the mind, the respect in working with one’s body, and the understanding that how we perceive ourselves is reflected in how we treat ourselves and others. I emphasise precise alignment to suit the needs of each body rather than forcefully pushing my students into certain poses. I encourage the connection between movement and breathing, and I encourage my students to be mindful and respectful of their own bodies, helping decide for themselves how far they want to go in each session. I also encourage my students to appreciate the beauty of their bodies and to be happy with what they have and wherever they are in the journey of yoga. “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.”

Come and try my yoga classes in and around Cambridge. Check my schedule to know further.
